The first thing I want to say is the big news is action coming out of China. China has done two things that have scared the market. One, they’ve banned bitcoin mining again. They’ve banned bitcoin mining several times, but now they’ve widened out that ban.
There’s one area of China where the vast majority of bitcoin mining occurs. And that authority that runs that particular region has let all of their mining customers know they’re shutting off all their power to that mining.
Whenever you disrupt or threaten the vast majority of the hash power on the bitcoin network, people panic. They panicked when it happened in 2013, 2015, and 2017. So that’s been happening, which has not been great for the price.
But the second piece that has really freaked people out is that China has called in all of their major banks and payment companies and told them they’re no longer allowed to provide any fiat banking services to anything remotely attached to crypto.
That means there’s no fiat on-ramp. You can’t take your money and then put it into a bank and then transfer it into bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency. And you can’t sell your cryptocurrency into cash and then remove it from a bank.
So what they’ve essentially done is cut off the fiat on-ramps and off-ramps, and that’s caused a problem. People are losing their minds about that.
This has created a couple of problems. One, because they’ve shut down mining, and because they’ve shut down access to capital, the miners in China have no choice but to sell their bitcoin in order to raise capital to fund the logistical move they’ve got to make.

Přikláním se na stranu, že krátkodobě problém, ale dlouhodobě jedině dobře, protože nebude monopol v Číně a další čínské kroky už nebudou v budoucnu mít takový efekt.

So what we’re seeing here is just people acting in alignment with their own best interest. And the short-term is it’s negatively affecting the price of bitcoin.
So let’s recap: Chinese mining has been banned. Chinese miners need to relocate. That’s going to cost money.
Chinese miners don’t have access to capital markets the way that Canadian and American miners do. So what do they do? They have to sell their bitcoin. And we know it’s forced selling. We know they have to sell because China has cut off all the fiat off-ramps and on-ramps. They have to take whatever price that they can get. Market makers are going to walk down their bid.
Then we have the institutional buyers. These aren’t dumb people. They know the prices are cheap right now, but then they look at GBTC and they say, “Huh. Okay. I’ve got to buy a quarter of a billion dollars’ worth of bitcoin. Do I buy it at spot? Or do I buy it 10−15% cheaper and make an extra $25−35 million in profit later when this thing trades back to spot prices?” It’s a no brainer. You go buy the GBTC.
So that, of course, is then creating more weakness in bitcoin, because that buyer is not there in the spot market.

The next question you may have is, “Well, how far is this going to go before all this buying and selling starts evening out?”
And the 100% guaranteed answer is, I don’t know. Nobody knows. It could be a month. It could be two months. It could be four months. Anybody that tells you they know definitively when that’s going to be is either fooling themselves or they’re fooling you.
The better question to ask yourself is, “Will this China action create a long-term valuation problem with bitcoin?” That’s a big question you should be asking yourself right now.
And I’m going to answer that. The answer is no

China has banned Facebook. They’ve banned Google. They’ve banned Instagram. They’ve banned so many American tech companies. Has that stopped those tech companies from being worth hundreds of billions of dollars, and in some cases, trillions of dollars? No.
To me, the action China is taking is actually making bitcoin stronger. What you’re seeing now is that bitcoin mining operations are moving. They’re moving to Kazakhstan, Siberia, and West Texas.
Think about that. If you believe, as I do, that bitcoin is destined to become the globe’s monetary base layer, wouldn’t you want most of that mining happening in your country?
The same way the U.S. dollar is the global reserve currency, I believe bitcoin will become a reserve asset.
This idea that because you can’t buy a cup of coffee with bitcoin means it doesn’t have value is ridiculous. You can’t buy a cup of coffee with a 400-ounce gold bar. It doesn’t mean that gold doesn’t have value.
What’s happening in China is ultimately very beneficial for bitcoin, and very beneficial for the strength of the ecosystem. It’s certainly painful to go through, but it’s no less painful than what I went through in 2017, when we saw China come out with the first bitcoin ban and the first bitcoin trading ban. Or what folks went through in ‘15 and ‘13, when China did the same thing.
This type of volatility is the price we pay for the explosive value creation that takes place in bitcoin. And I want you to remember, over the next five years, I think bitcoin will trade to half a million dollars per bitcoin. That’s dramatic.
So, any volatility we see here from $60,000 to $30,000... $30,000 to $60,000... it’s a blip when you go to half a million.

It’s very clear to understand that while we might see more regulation in the United States, that regulation needs to be in place if you want to see this asset move to a mass market asset.

So what do we do during this period of time while all of this is playing out? What we do is what we’ve always done. We let the market do what it’s going to do. We realize that the market is not always going to be rational. We realize that the market is driven a lot by fear and greed.
We realize that there are more new market participants in this space now than at any other time before. And those new people are deeply emotional. They’re buying at the high and they’re selling at the low, and they’re doing it consistently.
They’re buying things like Dogecoin with their life savings and hoping it’s going to become the next bitcoin. I really feel for those people. They’re making decisions that will ultimately make them poorer.
I don’t know if Dogecoin will survive. Maybe it will. I know bitcoin and Ethereum will survive and thrive.

So as you look at these markets here, if you have extra available cash to buy more bitcoin, ETH, or some of the other coins we have in our portfolio, you absolutely should do it.
But you shouldn’t do it with borrowed money. And you shouldn’t do it with short-term money. You should do it with long-term money.

If you look at the charts, and if you’ve got a three- to five- year timeframe, you always make money in bitcoin, Ethereum, and in many of the other assets I’ve recommended. The key is to stay focused on the long-term trend and to let time do the heavy lifting.

I’ve lived through volatility before like this, not just in crypto assets. It was similar in the late ’80s and early ’90s in tech. There was volatility like you cannot understand.
And at that time, I allowed all the negative headlines we were seeing on stocks like Intel, Microsoft, JDS Uniphase, Cisco, and Oracle to scare me and my clients out of those positions. And not only did I do myself a tremendous disservice that ended up costing me tens of millions of dollars in lost profits, but my clients also lost out on hundreds of millions of dollars in lost profits.
It’s a cross I bear to this day. The guilt that I feel for allowing myself to fall prey to those forces in the early ’90s... I can never expunge it. The only defense I have is that I was very young. I was 19−22 years old and had never really seen a full market cycle before.
I swore that as I got into this new phase with crypto assets, I wasn’t going to make the same mistakes I made in the early and mid ’90s. And I knew it was going to be difficult. I knew I was going to have to go through these trials and tribulations of extreme volatility.
But I also knew those lessons from the ’90s... and that if I could apply them here, not only would my own wealth transform, but the folks that were focused on what I was saying and bought in on what I was saying were going to transform their lives as well.

That’s exactly what has happened over the last five years, and it’s exactly what will happen, I believe, over the next five years, as we go from this asset being essentially a backwater asset in the world of traditional finance to becoming a massive, multitrillion-dollar asset.
I wish I had someone back then to mentor me through that volatility, because it was brutal. I remember Oracle dropping 85%, Microsoft dropping 40 and 50%, and people telling me, “Microsoft is never going to survive. The government’s going to break them up. The government won’t let them get that big.” Or, “Oh my God, there are five other companies that have a better operating system than Microsoft. How can you be buying Microsoft shares?”
